Kurumba Maldives makes in roads in their social responsibility plans

Kurumba Maldives has been making progress in their corporate social responsibility program. The key areas of their social responsibility plans are local orphanages support, environment, local arts and music and education.

In the last two weeks, there have been donations of equipment to the Villingilli and Maafushi orphanages. A fund raiser - called party with a difference - will be hosted on Kurumba on the 1st June 2012. There will be 8 bands, 3 DJ’s and other entertainment. The day’s entry fees, food and beverage stalls takings and silent auctions money will be used to purchase urgently required equipment for the Villingilli orphanage.

A waste management facility has been built on Kurumba that has greatly increased the recycling of plastics, glass, metal and aluminum. The glass is crushed and can be reused in cement for buildings. The plastic is shredded making it suitable for recycling plants and green waste is put through a mulcher for reuse in gardens. The recyclable goods are transferred to a recycling company in the Maldives.

Energy throughout the Maldives is created by diesel generators due to the stability of power required. Over the past year, Kurumba has made some vast improvements in reducing its energy consumption. There has been investment in more efficient guest rooms air conditioning and refrigeration; solar hot water systems; heat exchangers from the generators create hot water for the kitchen; LED lighting is now being used in higher consumption areas such as the kitchen, laundry and staff areas; lower power consuming water pumps were purchased to use in our desalination plant; and a computerized generator management system has been purchased to assist us with managing energy loads. This has resulted in an average saving of 15,000 liters of diesel per month over the past three months.
Education and development of the team is playing an important role. In January 2012, Kurumba announced the signing of 2 Maldivian Management Trainees. The purpose of this program is to develop more Maldivian managers within the industry. The program selects two high potential employees from within Kurumba and allows them to complete a 12 month program where they will work in every department within the resort in order to improve their overall understanding and knowledge.

Kurumba Maldives has commenced a national accreditation program for its Food and Beverage staff. This program commenced on the 1st March 2012 and the training will last 6 months. Ten team members are currently enlisted in this program whom will be trained and assessed during this period. The accreditation will provide team members with National Certificates in Food and Beverage.

The General Manager of Kurumba Maldives has stated: “We are proud of how far we have come with our corporate social responsibility programs. Whilst we understand there is some way to go, we see many changes that are making for positive change in this area. Our momentum is in the right direction and I do believe that Kurumba Maldives is well on the way to be known to be socially responsible”.

Kurumba Maldives will be launching a new webpage in the coming weeks highlighting these areas including a list of urgent items required for the orphanages.
